The 1800s, particularly that mid-1840s was known as the hungry forties, which was due to food shortages that occurred in Europe, particularly Northern Europe. It produced an excessive mortality and suffering rate across the affected areas, particularly Scottish Highlands, and Ireland. The lack of staple food sources caused a lot of deaths around the area.
